SEOUL -- KT has forged a partnership with Hyundai Engineering and Construction, a major builder in South Korea, to co-develop 5G-based automated construction technology that would help accelerate the adoption of automated robots and large data files in construction sites.

KT said in a statement on Tuesday that the company signed a memorandum of understanding with Hyundai E&C on the development of 5G-based automated construction technologies. "Through this MOU, KT and Hyundai E&C plan to start innovating construction sites based on 5G," KT's network strategy unit head Seo Chang-seok was quoted as saying.

Hyundai E&C will adopt KT's corporate 5G network by the end of this year and test technology solutions at two sites. According to KT, its 5G technology is ideal to establish a super-fast, low-latency system and secure a data mobile communication network that would connect automated construction equipment including robots and heavy equipment.

The utilization of 5G at construction sites has been researched by South Korean technology and construction companies. In November last year, Doosan Infracore, a machinery manufacturer, demonstrated a remote-controlled unmanned excavator using 5G network.

Hyundai Construction Equipment, a construction equipment maker, teamed up with American software company Trimble and SK Telecom in December last year to develop a 5G-based smart construction platform that would use artificial intelligence to analyze 3D data collected by unmanned drones.
