An international yacht championship held annually in western South Korea has been chosen as one of the best tours of 2008, organizers said Friday.

The 2010 Korea Match Cup has received the 'Best Event Award' for holding the most successful tour among the ten world championships featured in the 2008 World Match Racing Tour, said cup officials.

The Korea Match Cup, which marks its third year, is a spin-off of the World Match Racing Tour, a professional sailing series that presents ten worldwide races, sanctioned by the International Sailing Federation.

Patrick Lim, executive chairman of the World Match Racing Tour, said the award was given after evaluating ten categories, including hospitality, branding and media attention. The award-winning race was especially noted for co-hosting a boat fair with the yacht rally.

Tour officials, meanwhile, added that the belated acknowledgement is due to three years of evaluation.

This year's race, which kicked off on Wednesday and runs through Sunday, is in full swing with top-notch skippers from around the world vying for the title in waters off Hwaseong, about 45 kilometers southwest of Seoul.

Officials said an international boat show, showcasing around 600 booths, is also open alongside the sailing event.//Yonhap
