South Korea‘s top automaker Hyundai Motor Co. launched its best seller mid-size passenger sedan, the new Sonata, in China Friday, aimed at boosting its market share in the world’s largest market for automobiles.

China surpassed the United States in 2009 as the world‘s largest single market for automobiles. More than 11.1 million passenger vehicles were sold in China last year with sales of mid-size sedans there jumping 18.5 percent from a year earlier to some 2.06 million units.

Hyundai said in a press release, “Equipped with the latest technologies and top value, the new Sonata will set new standards for mid-sized sedans in China while also helping boost Hyundai Motor’s sales in the Chinese market.”

The new Sonata comes with a 2.0-liter engine that generates maximum horsepower of 165 and maximum torque of 20.1 kilogram-meters or a 2.4-liter engine that produces maximum horsepower and torque of 179 and 22.8 kilogram-meters.

In addition, it also comes with a variety of high technology features, including a button start up key and a tire pressure monitoring system that offer maximum safety and many other options.

Hyundai and its affiliate Kia Motors Corp. sold more than 700,000 vehicles in China last year and they are expecting its sales to approach 1 million units this year following the recent launch of Kia‘s best-selling mid-size sedan K5 and the Hyundai Sonata this week.
