Cambodia topped the list of migrant workers who entered South Korea to be employed under the work permit system for manual laborers in the first nine months of this year, the statistics office said Dec. 21.

According to Statistics Korea, a total of 2,117 Cambodians arrived in the country to work as of Sept. 30. The figure accounted for 19.3 percent of 10,962 migrant workers who came here during the January-September period.

The Cambodians were followed by workers from Vietnam with 1,937, Indonesia with 1,047, Thailand with 945 and Myanmar with 859.

Since 2008, more than 2,000 Cambodians have been allowed to work here per year.

Vietnam had topped the migrant workers list with about 19,000 workers in 2008 and 12,000 laborers in 2011.

"At that time, one out of four migrant workers here came from Vietnam. But the situation has changed after the government began to accept workers from more countries in 2008," a Statistics Korea official said.

In 2007, people from nine country came here to work, but the number of countries increased to 15 in 2008, the official said.

Migrant workers, with an E-9 non-professional work visa, can work in the country for up to three years. The visa is renewed on a yearly basis.
