Subways have become a hotbed for sexual offenses against women. The number of sexual offenses against women that were reported to have occurred on subways in Seoul reached 1,026 in 2013, up 20.1 percent from 848 in the previous year, government statistics said Tuesday.

People, who were arrested on suspicion of committing related crimes on the subway, totaled 952 in number, up 19 percent from a year earlier, according to the statistics released by the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family and the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency.

Twenty-eight percent of the reported sexual harassments occurred during the morning commuting hours between 8 a.m. and 10 a.m, while 23.5 percent happened between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m.

The comparable figure stood at 11.3 percent between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. and 9.3 percent between 10 p.m. and midnight.

Sexual offenses on the subway were most frequent on line 2 with 33.9 percent of the total, followed by line 4 (18.3 percent), line 1 (17.5 percent), line 7 (12 percent) and line 3 (7.4 percent).

Sexual harassments were most frequent between April and June with 422 cases, compared with 128 reported between January and March.

The ministry plans to conduct campaigns to eradicate sexual offenses at 15 subway stations on Wednesday, in cooperation with police and Seoul Metro, the operator of subway lines 1-4, officials said.
