A senior Malaysia Airlines official said that of the 295 people aboard, 154 were Dutch; 27, Australians; and 23, Malaysians, according to the Associated Press news agency. Other victims included 11 Indonesians, six British, four German, four Belgians and three Filipinos.
Huib Gorter, senior vice-president of Malaysia Airlines, was quoted as saying during a news conference in Amsterdam that authorities were trying to determine the nationalities of the rest of the passengers.
The jet departed from Amsterdam and was scheduled to arrive in Kuala Lumpur.
