Samsung Electronics on Wednesday disclosed a plan to build up a viable virtual reality (VR) ecosystem as part of its efforts to nurture the VR business as one of its new growth engines.

Samsung will put priority on building an ecosystem on VR technology with its smartphone business, Koo Yun-mo of Samsung's mobile division, told reporters.

"While focusing on hardware in which we have a competitive edge, we will expland our business to build a VR ecosystem," he said, promising to reveal new technology at the upcoming tech show in Spain.

Samsung said the three pillars of the ecosystem are capturing video, sharing them on platforms and providing quality contents.

VR technology has been applied by major tech and media firms such as Google and CNN.

But Koo said more efforts should be made to improve the device's resolution and remove possible motion sickness that could be sparked by some VR content.

He called for better network technology as VR videos' real-time streaming can only be made possible through a fifth-generation network.

Samsung has suggested VR technology would play a crucial role in improving the competitiveness of its smartphones. Last year the company released its Gear VR in cooperation with its US partner Oculus VR.

It has also unveiled Rink, a VR headset controller. VR headsets developed by competitors have their own controllers but they are of gamepad type, while Rink recognizes the movement of a user's hands and fingers to navigate, command and manipulate.
