South Korean tech giant Samsung Electronics Thursday forecast a more than 17 percent increase in its second-quarter operating profit on the back of brisk sales of its flagship smartphones.
Operating profit is expected to reach about 8.1 trillion won (6.99 billion US dollars) in the April-June period, up 17.4 percent from a year earlier, the company said, attributing its better-than-expected performance to strong sales estimated at 50 trillion won, which is up three percent from 48 trillion won a year earlier.
Samsung, however, did not provide its estimate of second-quarter net profit.
The company's mobile division posted a first-quarter operating profit of 3.89 trillion won. Market watchers say the division showed a better performance in the second quarter, helped by brisk sales of two flagship smartphones -- Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge.
