The accident occurred on Friday when the tourist bus, carrying 43 Indian nationals, fell off a highway in the Tanahun district of central Nepal. The bus plunged approximately 150 meters down into the Marsyangdi River.
According to AP report, 27 passengers were killed, and 16 others were injured. The injured were airlifted to hospitals in Kathmandu using military helicopters. The group was reportedly traveling to the Pashupatinath, a Hindu shrine dedicated to Hindu deity Shiva. They had departed from Gorakhpur, India, the day before, spent a night in Pokhara, Nepal, and were en route to Kathmandu when the accident occurred.
Nepal's challenging natural terrain, characterized by mountainous regions, often results in narrow and winding roads. Coupled with inadequate road maintenance, this leads to frequent accidents.
Last month, two buses were swept away by a landslide in Nepal, leaving only three of the 65 passengers alive while the rest were either killed or went missing.
