SEOUL -- The third series of South Korea's trademark gold bullion medals was unveiled Thursday, featuring the image of a tiger walking by bamboo trees.
The Korean Minting, Security Printing & ID Card Operating Corporation (KOMSCO) has issued its tiger gold bullion series with its design changing every year. In Korean history and culture, the tiger is regarded as a guardian that drives away evil spirit and a sacred creature that brings good luck. The first series was issued in 2016.
For 2018, KOMSCO minted a total of 10,090 medals in the denominations of 31.1 grams, 15.55 grams and 7.78 grams of 99.99 percent fine gold that would be put on sale from April 2 at home.
The third series featured the image of a tiger walking by bamboo trees majestically on the front. On the back, a latent image technique that changes letters according to the tilted angles was applied to prevent forgery and falsification. KOMSCO said it has sold tiger gold bullion medals worth eight million US dollars so far.
