SEOUL -- To maintain a high level of online security, a prominent South Korean scientific research institute will develop artificial intelligence (AI) which can detect and counteract cyber attacks in real-time.

Currently, it's hard to respond quickly to stop simultaneous and coordinated attacks as online security is often maintained manually by human operators,

"We will fully utilize stacked data and experience to create an AI cybersecurity solution," the Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST), a state-funded research institute in Seoul, said in a statement on Friday.

The institute said its cybersecurity AI would detect and counteract against cyber terrorism in real-time by 2020. KIST will develop a test platform this year and a security system next year.

South Korea, with one of the world's fastest and widespread internet networks, has become a constant target by hackers. According to data released by Microsoft Korea last month, South Korean corporates suffered a direct and indirect loss of $72 billion last year because of cyber attacks, equivalent to about five percent of GDP.

On Wednesday, the science ministry emphasized the importance of security in information and communications technology (ICT) sectors and said it would invest some 567.4 billion won in state money to build an ICT security cluster by 2025.
