SEOUL -- South Korea's top telecom company KT will turn an old amusement park in Seoul into the world's first 5G-based modern fun park installed with a bunch of intelligent cameras as well as virtual reality and mixed reality rides to provide differentiated services.

KT signed a memorandum of understanding Tuesday with the operator of Seoul Land to set up infrastructure using the super-fast mobile communication network. Rides will be installed with compact cameras with wireless communication modules.

Since the theme park opened in southern Seoul in 1988, it has become a favorite picnic place for weekenders, families and young couples. The park attracted some 2.6 million visitors in 2016, but the number of visitors is consistently decreasing by about 10 percent every year due to aging rides, roller coasters and other facilities.

KT said that through renovation, Seoul Land would house amusement attractions featuring virtual reality (VR) and mixed reality to provide more thrilling and exciting experience as well as ensuring the safety of visitors with intelligent CCTVs hooked onto the 5G network.

Because Seoul Land is an outdoor theme park, KT will also provide visitors with information about air quality using its internet of things (IoT)-based air quality monitoring platform.

South Korea began operating commercialized 5G mobile networks for the first time in the world in December 2018. Currently, 5G networks, which are at least ten times faster than 4G mobile networks, are used for businesses such as transferring data and controlling machines in smart factories, but services for smartphone users will come in March.

Experts predict the 5G era will bring a dramatic change to daily life. Technology and telecom companies are trying hard to apply 5G technologies to connected car technologies, autonomous driving, the development of VR content and other sectors.
