SK Chemicals ready to commercialize bio-polymer PO3G based on corn

SEOUL -- For the first time as a South Korean company, SK Chemicals will commercialize PO3G (Polyoxytrimethylene Glycol), a polymer derived from biological raw materials, using fermented corn, to proactively respond to tightened international regulations on the use of plastics.

SK Chemicals said Tuesday that the construction of PO3G facilities will begin within this year in the southeastern industrial port city of Ulsan. The company said its PO3G products would be mainly used for materials that require elasticity, such as polyurethane and spandex.

Global sports and fashion industries are expanding PO3G to their products. Sneakers and fashion products using PO3G have the advantage of smoother, elastic resilience and wear resistance over existing products, making them more wearable.

PO3G reduces greenhouse gas emissions by 42 percent and offers long durability. This family of high performance polyols is an ideal replacement for petroleum-based ingredients as it offers numerous advantages in various fields of applications.
