SEOUL -- South Korea's state railway management company will establish an internet of things (IoT)-based railroad infrastructure management system. The remote management system will help the railway management body to monitor its infrastructure in real-time and detect parts where maintenance is needed.

The Korea National Railway (KR) said in a statement on June 8 that the company will carry out a state project to establish the new railway management system using IoT sensors on an 11-kilometer long track in Wonju some 85 kilometers (52 miles) southeast of Seoul. The system will be demonstrated before it is applied to other parts of the country.

"We will provide a safe railroad experience for citizens by utilizing smart technologies designed for the maintenance of railways," a KR official was quoted as saying.

When a problem occurs in the railway station or in the tunnel, a lot of manpower is required to complete the repair of the equipment within a short period of time. Railway maintenance work is mainly done in the middle of the night. It is more efficient to prevent malfunctions than deploying personnel to fix problems.
