SEOUL -- South Korea will lead the international standardization of green hydrogen production technology. The country’s standards agency predicted that the standardization will boost South Korea's presence in the global hydrogen economy.

Green hydrogen does not generate greenhouse gases during its production process. It is created using a water electrolysis technique based on renewable energy sources. Many hydrogen companies have adopted water electrolysis technologies to produce eco-friendly hydrogen at a low cost.

At a virtual meeting held on July 29, the Korean Agency for Technology and Standards (KATS) said it would establish safety requirements and testing methods of hydrogen facilities. The meeting was attended by over 20 experts from 12 countries, including the United States, Britain, Germany, China, and Australia. Participants will cooperate to establish specific international standards by the end of 2022. The meeting was aimed at working out standards that would prevent degradation of hydrogen production and performance of separation membrane.

Degradation of hydrogen production facilities can be caused by the intermittency of renewable energies such as solar and wind power when producing green hydrogen. Because renewable energy sources such as sunlight, wind and waves are not consistent, power generated by clean energy sources fluctuates over time. The change in power output can damage facilities.
