Hyundai Mobis develops self-driving tech capable of navigating through narrow alleyways

SEOUL -- Hyundai Mobis, the car parts maker of Hyundai auto group, has developed the world's first self-driving technology that helps autonomous vehicles to navigate through narrow alleyways. Using the new technology, self-driving cars can travel through narrow roads and reverse out of a dead-end road.

Hyundai Mobis said in a statement on November 14 that the company has developed Mobis Parking System (MPS) that helps cars autonomously travel through narrow alleyways and move into tight parking spots. The next-generation parking system can help drivers safely travel through tight passages inside underground parking lots. When a driver comes to a dead-end road, he or she can reverse out by just pressing a button. MPS records the driving route of the vehicle in real-time and generates a reverse route when the button is pressed. The system can automatically control the steering wheel and the speed of the vehicle.

Hyundai Mobis developed the MPS based on its self-developed ultrasonic sensor technology. While radar sensors are useful in detecting objects from a long distance, ultrasonic sensors can better identify nearby objects in environments such as underground parking lots and narrow alleys. Self-driving cars equipped with the MPS can safely travel through narrow roads if it has 40 centimeters (16 inches) of free space on both sides. The car parts maker predicts that there will be high demands in the European market and South Korean market where side streets are very narrow.
