ADD develops hyperspectral imaging detection system for aerial reconnaissance

SEOUL -- South Korea's defense technology development agency has developed a hyperspectral imaging system to detect and classify targets for aerial reconnaissance using object-specific spectral information. The electro-optical technology can significantly improve target identification capabilities of reconnaissance planes.

It was the result of a seven-year program launched by the Agency for Defense Development (ADD) in 2014 to acquire technologies based on a hyperspectral imaging system that collects and processes information from across the electromagnetic spectrum. The goal of hyperspectral imaging is to obtain the spectrum for each pixel in the image of a scene, with the purpose of finding objects, identifying materials, or detecting processes.
By analyzing spectral signals unique to objects, ADD said its new technology can automatically identify targets that are disguised or partly hidden as well as simulated targets aimed at inducing mistaken bombing. A prototype was applied to an aviation reconnaissance system for environmental tests to check durability. It has passed functional performance tests.

 The program laid the technical foundation for actual application to surveillance and reconnaissance systems, the agency said, adding it would help localize major components such as spectroscopic devices and detectors that have relied on imports
