SEOUL -- Samsung Electro-Mechanics, an electric component maker in South Korea, has developed a multilayer ceramic capacitor with high-temperature characteristics applicable to automobile powertrain. It is a product with high entry barriers that can be mass-produced only by a small number of foreign companies due to its high technical difficulty.
A multilayer ceramic capacitor (MLCC) controls the flow of electricity on electric circuits to reduce electrical noises on circuits. Such capacitors play a vital role in the safe operation of high-precision machines and electric parts because even the tiniest amount of unwanted electrical noise can cause malfunctions.
The automobile powertrain requires high reliability and top-level technology due to high power consumption and heat generation. Samsung Electro-Mechanics will produce 13 types of MLCCs capable of guaranteeing 150 degrees Celsius and supply them to global auto parts suppliers.
Samsung Electro-Mechanics said that its powertrain MLCCs would operate normally without reducing capacity even in harsh environments. "We expand our market share in MLCCs for automobiles by differentiating materials and manufacturing methods," Vice President Kim Doo-young said in a statement on April 11.
Based on technology in ultra-small and ultra-high-capacity MLCCS, Samsung Electro-Mechanics said it would strengthen its lineup of high-value products to expand the supply of MLCCs for automobiles.
