◆Obama condemns India terror attacks

U.S. President-elect Barack Obama on Wednesday condemned the terror attacks occurred in India's Mumbai, which have claimed nearly 80 lives and left some 250 wounded.

"These coordinated attacks on innocent civilians demonstrate the grave and urgent threat of terrorism," Obama's chief national security spokesperson, Brooke Anderson, said in a statement.

"President-elect Obama strongly condemns today's terrorist attacks in Mumbai, and his thoughts and prayers are with the victims, their families, and the people of India."

"The United States must continue to strengthen our partnerships with India and nations around the world to root out and destroy terrorist networks," the statement added.

Also on Wednesday, the White House and the State Department slammed the attacks in Mumbai.

"No word on any American casualties at this point, and still assessing the hostage situation," the White House said.


◆EU strongly condemns terrorist attacks in Mumbai

The European Commission, the executive arm of the European Union (EU), strongly condemned the terrorist attacks in Mumbai Wednesday night , while rendering its support for the Indian government in the fight against terrorism.

"The European Commission condemns in the strongest terms the heinous terrorist attacks this night in Mumbai which have cost the lives of many innocent people and injured others. Terrorism is never justified and is no means to achieve any goal. We stand by the Indian government in its fight against terrorism," said the commission in a statement.

"Our thoughts are with the families who have lost loved ones and we wish a speedy recovery to those injured," it added.

Meanwhile, the EU's French presidency issued a similar statement Wednesday night.

At least 80 people were killed and 250 others injured when terror struck the Indian financial capital of Mumbai late on Wednesday night in a coordinated serial explosions and indiscriminate firing rocked eight areas across the city.
