LG Electronics Inc., South Korea's No. 2 electronics maker, remained the top seller of drum washing machines in the U.S. market in the January-March period, making 13 straight quarters at the top, a market researcher said Sunday.

In terms of turnover, LG Electronics had a 24-percent share of the U.S. drum washer market in the first quarter of this year, far outstripping Whirlpool's 13.1 percent, according to the Stevenson Company.

Based on the number of drum washers sold, LG Electronics also had the largest share at 24 percent, the market researcher said.

The South Korean company said it topped the U.S. market for premium drum washers that sell for US$1,200, as well as the $600-$1,000 segment.

"Our success in the U.S. market with high entry barriers can be attributed to the competitiveness of our products that use technologies differentiated from our competitors," said Jo Seong-jin, vice president for LG's washing machine business.

LG Electronics is the flagship of LG Group, one of South Korea's leading conglomerates. It is also the world's third-largest cellphone maker.//Yonhap
