Many analysts say that recent years are the most dangerous on the Korean Peninsula since the Korean War after Pyongyang launched two military attacks on South Korean last year, including sinking a military ship and shelling a border island. The North is also still developing its uranium enrichment program for nuclear weapons creation despite international sanctions and denounces.
Democrat John Kerry, chairman of the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee, says, “So far, international initiatives have not stabilized the situation, much less brought about a change of course in North Korea.” Voice of America quoted as saying.
Some North Korean experts or representatives from White House stressed that for talks with North Korea to resume, the North needs first show its commitment to improving relations with Seoul, take irreversible steps to denuclearize and end its provocations, VOP added.
Richard Lugar of Indiana, the Ranking Republican on the Foreign Relations Committee, was quoted by VOA as saying that although Obama administration has worked closely with Seoul to respond to the North’s provocation, its strategy for ending Pyongyang’s nuclear weapons program is unclear.
