The “Korean Wave,” also known as “Hallyu,” refers to South Korean pop culture, ranging from television shows to pop singers such as Girls Generation, Kara, Bae Young-jun, has spread to not only Asia but in Europe in recent years. Japan is one the countries that has been affected the most with increasing number of fans of Korean dramas and music.
The protesters were asking for less broadcast time for Korean dramas and music videos by a local television station.
The protesters shouted, “We do not want to watch Korean TV dramas,” and adding that Fuji TV should not force people to watch programs they did not want to see that the Japanese people desired more homegrown programs on TV.
The protest against the ‘Korean Wave’ in Tokyo is the second time and they complain ‘Korean Wave’ is taking over Japanese media such as TV, news, magazines, and music. The first protest was held on Aug. 7 with around 2,500 people taking part.
The protest organizers said that they did not expect such a large turnout, and said they will send a public letter to the management of Fuji TV to stop favoring Korean entertainment content.
