S.Korean Dominate at World Short Track Skate Championship

On Sunday, Kwak Yoon-gy won the 1,000- and 3,000-meter races as South Korea dominated the world short track speedskating
championships. He won the men’s 1,000 final in a time of 1 minute, 27.772 seconds.

His teammate, Noh Jink-yu, who finished ahead of Kwak to win the 1,500 meters Friday, had a second-place time of 1:34.463, followed by Canada’s Charles Hamelin in 1:55.181.

Kwak also won the 3,000, beating teammate Noh. In the women’s 1,000, Cho Ha-ri of South Korea finished in a time of 1:31.283. Li Jianrou of China, who won gold in Friday’s 1,500 meters, was second in 1:31.325, followed by Valerie Maltais of Canada in 1:31.350 and Britain’s Elise Christie in 1:32.518.

Maltais also finished with a gold medal in the 3,000 meter final and finished third in the 1,000. Maltais finished in a time of 4:55.408, with Arianna Fontana of Italy second in a time of 5:01.187 and Marie-Eve Drolet of Canada third in 5:03.387.

Cho was fourth in 5:03.562, and Li fifth in a time of 5:04.961. Canada was first in the men’s 5,000-meter relay with the Netherlands and South Korea taking second and third. China won the women’s 3,000 relay ahead of the United States and South Korea.
