With Korean film-makers releasing back-to-back blockbusters, 2012 is shaping up to become one of Korea‘s biggest years in the film industry. Critics have noted that Korea’s film industry has grown in leaps and bounds over the the last decade. As a result many films have started to gain international recognition and acclaim.

This year, two Korean movies have been invited to compete for the Palme d‘Or, the top prize, at the 65th Cannes International Film Festival. One film is Hong Sang-soo’s “In Another Country” and the other is Im Sang-soo‘s “The Taste of Money.”

Eight of Hong’s films have been shown previously at Cannes. His best known film is“The Power of Kangwon Province. ”In Another Country“ has been highly anticipated since it stars French actrees Isabelle Huppert, who has twice won the best actress award at Cannes. It will be the second appearance at Cannes for Im, who did a remake in 2010 of the classic Korean film, ”The Housemaid“.

The Korean film industry hopes that either film might surpass the success of Park Chan-wook‘s ”Old Boy,“ which won the second-place Grand Prix of Jury award at Cannes in 2004.

This year will mark the fourth time that two Korean films have been chosen for the film competition. On the side note, if you’re looking for a romantic movie that will bring back those long lost memories of your first love, then look no further than Lee Yong-ju‘s latest film, ”Architecture 101“. With over 3 million ticket sales, ”Architecture 101“ has become one of Korea’s most popular romance movies of all time.

Currently, Bong Joon-ho‘s monster film, ”The Host“, released in 2006, holds the title of Korea’s most-watched film with over 13 million ticket sales.

The 65th Cannes International Film Festival will be held from May 16th to the 27th.
