Sales of imported cars in S. Korea increase 24.6% last year: importers

The number of imported vehicles sold in South Korea last year reached a record high of 130,858 units, the Korea Automobile Importers and Distributors Association (KAIDA) said on Jan. 7. The figure represents a 24.6 percent jump from 2011.

BMW 520d took the lion’s share of 7,485 units, followed by Toyota Camry with 5,687 units and Mercedes-Benz E300 with 5,574 units.

By brand, BMW topped the list with 28,152 units, followed by Mercedes-Benz with 20,389, Volkswagen with 18,395, Audi with 15,126, Toyota with 10,795, MINI with 5,927, Ford with 5,126; Lexus with 4,976, Chrysler with 4,123, Honda with 3,944, Peugeot with 2,407 and Nissan with 2,398.

The comparable figure stood at 1,916 for Land Rover, 1,768 for Volvo, 1,516 for Porsche, 1,197 for Jaguar, 1,103 for Infiniti, 627 for Subaru, 475 for Cadillac, 255 for Citroen, 135 for Bentley, 81 for Mitsubishi and 27 for Rolls-Royce, the KAIDA said.

Vehicles with an engine capacity of 2,000cc or lower totaled 64,638 units or 49.4 percent of the total, followed by vehicles with an engine capacity between 2,000cc and 3,000cc with 43,648 units or 33.4 percent.

By region, Europe ranked first with 97,210 units or 74.3 percent of the total, while Japan placed second with 23,924 units or 18.3 percent. The United States came in third with 9,724 units or 7.4 percent.
