According to recent comments from BlackBerry CEO Heins, they are contemplating that the future will not be in tablets, or play a marginal role.

CEO Thorsten Heins announced at the Milken Institute Conference on Monday that “In five years I don’t think there’ll be a reason to have a tablet anymore.” Also “tablets themselves are not a good business model.”

In a market that has largely been ruled by the Apple’s iPad, BlackBerry launched its first tablet in April of 2011 called the PlayBook, which had very little impact for BlackBerry.

In the March quarter Apple has shipped 19.5 million units of the iPad while in comparison BlackBerry has shipped a paltry amount of 2.4 million units of the PlayBook since its initial launch two years ago.

The tablet market is becoming increasingly more competitive and tighter with profitability, so future endeavors into this market may lead to increased of future losses. Besides the tablet market BlackBerry may consider expanding into the “phablet” market and increase its screen size similar to the Samsung Galaxy Note.
