Dubai sentenced a rape victim in jail

Dubai sentenced a woman who was raped to 16 months in jail.

Marte Deborah Dalelv (24), a Norwegian interior designer, was staying in Dubai for a business trip. After spending a night out with her colleagues, she woke up only to find out that she was getting raped by one of her coworkers.

She went to the front lobby to fetch help and alert the local authorities, but the hotel staffs asked her if she was sure. When the Dubai police responded to the scene, Dalelv was shocked find out the way they treated her.

Now Dalelv is slammed with 16 months in jail for having sex outside of marriage and alcohol consumption even though she was raped. The attacker only received 13 months in jail.

The Norwegian government is trying to contact UAE authorities for revoke the verdict, but the activists and some of politicians in Norway think that Norwegian government is not taking enough action.
