The health authority confirmed Sunday that 63 patients have been infected with "super bacteria" that are hard to be treated by antibiotics.

According to the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the number of patients infected with OXA-232-type carbapenemase-producing enterobacteriaceae (CPE) totaled 63 at 13 hospitals nationwide as of Aug. 1.

It was the first time that this type of CPE has been detected in the country, the health agency said.

The nation's first case of the CPE type infection was reported from a patient who was injured in India and relocated to a Korean hospital later, it said.

The healthy authority said it will take tighter measures to prevent the further spread of the super bacteria and increase surveillance.
