Employment rate of foreign residents in S. Korea drops

The employment rate of foreigners residing in South Korea has dropped in recent months, the country’s statistical office said Thursday. 

Of 1,126,000 foreign residents aged 15 or older, about 760,000 or 67.5 percent had jobs as of May this year. The figure represents a decrease of 3.5 percentage points from June of 2012. 

Of them, 472,000 were regular workers, and 263,000 were either temporary or irregular employees. 

Those with a monthly income between 1 million won and 2 million won accounted for 65.7 percent of the total. About 21.7 percent and 6.9 percent earned between 2 million won and 3 million won and more than 3 million won, respectively. 

Meanwhile, the number of foreign residents aged 15 or older living in the country increased 1.1 percent or 12,000 people to 1,126,000 during the period between June last year and May this year, according to Statistics Korea.
