SNU places 44th in world university rankings

Seoul National University (SNU) moved up 15 notches to 44th place in the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2013-2014 released on Monday.

Six other South Korean institutions of higher learning were in the annual rankings published by the THE, a weekly magazine based in London.

The Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) moved up 12 places to land at 56th.

However, Pohang University of Science and Technology (POSTECH) and Yonsei University moved down 10 and seven places to 60th and 190th, respectively.

Korea and Sungkyunkwan universities belonged to the 201-225 group, while Hanyang University was in the 350-400 bracket.

California Institute of Technology retained the top spot in the rankings, whereas Harvard and Oxford shared second place. Standford placed fourth, followed by Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Princeton.

Tokyo University in Japan ranked 23rd, the highest among Asian universities.
