Per-capita overseas credit card spending slips for 6th consecutive quarter in Q1

South Korea’s per-capita credit card spending abroad dropped for the sixth consecutive quarter in the first three months of this year, the central bank said Friday.

The amount spent by each person declined by US$18 to an average of $407 in the January-March period from the previous quarter, according to the Bank of Korea (BOK).

The amount of overseas credit card spending per head has decreased since the fourth quarter of 2012 when the figure stood at $474.

Meanwhile, the number of South Koreans going overseas rose 9.3 percent to 3.93 million in the first quarter from the previous quarter.

Their credit card bills totaled $2.82 billion, down 0.2 percent from the previous quarter when the amount hit a quarterly record high of $2.83 billion.
