“Roaring Currents,” a film on the victory of Adm. Yi Sun-sin's 12 “Turtle Ships” against a Japanese fleet of 133 in 1597, drew more than 7 million viewers in just eight days since its release, its local distributor said.

The movie surpassed the 7 million viewer mark as of 2 p.m. Aug. 6, the fastest record for a South Korean film, according to CJ Entertainment.

It was five days faster than "The Host" (2006), "The Thieves" (2012) or "The Face Reader" (2013).

“Roaring Currents" also broke new records, including biggest opening with about 680,000 viewers and highest number of single weekday visitors with some 700,000 viewers.

Veteran actor Choi Min-sik, who starred in “Oldboy” (2003), plays the role of Adm. Yi of the Choseon Kingdom who defeated Japanese Hideyoshi’s invasion (1592-1598) of the Korean Peninsula. Choseon is the old name of Korea.

President Park Geun-hye watched "Roaring Currents" Wednesday at a CGV theater in Yeouido, Seoul, along with her senior aides and officials of the Presidential Committee for Cultural Prosperity, the presidential office said.
