The Romanian meteorologists on Wednesday announced the country had its warmest Christmas Eve on record.

This year's Christmas Eve registered high temperatures across the country and in the capital city of Bucharest, with nearly 15 degrees above normal, said Viorica Dima, meteorologist for the National Meteorology Administration Service.

"Normally at this time of year, around Christmas, we should have during the day country-wide temperatures between 3 and 5 degrees Celsius and at night, between minus 11 and minus one degree Celsius," said the meteorologist, adding that they already recorded on Wednesday, a temperature of 19 degrees in southern city of Targoviste, while in Bucharest a temperature of 16 degrees Celsius.

According to the meteorologist, there were years with higher temperatures recorded in December, but on this year's Christmas Eve, it was the highest for the last 50 years since meteorological records began in several areas in the south, including Bucharest.
