With deadly smog covering the city of Beijing, the capital of China, the online search for condoms and sportswear are surging. China’s most favored online shopping platform “taobao.com” search ratings showed last week.
As winter came, households using coal for heating dramatically increased. Its effects combined with industries which are not equipped with anti-pollution facilities caused dense smog to loom across the whole city. The Chinese government issued its first ever “red alert” over the smog, Monday.
Masks which could filter out microparticles were the favorite of Beijingers. Search for the items in online shopping mall spiked during smog seasons every year, but according to Taobao, the online search for condoms have increased in great numbers when compared to other cities of China.
Taobao told China Daily that the reason for the phenomenon is, as people have greater concerns of good child bearing and trying to prevent pregnancy when there’s smog.
Search for sportswear also spiked during smog seasons. Taobao predicted that people’s strong will to exercise when the weather gets clear leads them to look for sportswear online.
