SEOUL -- To promote tourism, the operator of an airport on South Korea's southern resort island of Jeju launched an unmanned rental service. Travelers can rent electric scooters and electric bicycles and place them anywhere after use so that a local smart mobility company can pick up for charging.

Jeju, a scenic semitropical island that draws about 15 million visitors annually, has a vast network of tourism infrastructure including sightseeing, hiking and many unique restaurants. However, the commercial area around the airport does not benefit much from tourism as visitors usually pick rental cars and public transports at the airport to visit tourist spots.

The Jeju branch of the Korea Airports Corporation, a public corporation that manages airports in South Korea, said in a statement on September 25 that it has partnered with Jeju Tourism Organization, a local tourism promoting office, to open a "smart mobility" zone in front of the airport's main arrival gate.

"By providing an eco-friendly smart mobility service, we expect to protect Jeju's unpolluted environment and promote cooperative development between the Jeju airport and its local community," a Jeju airport official was quoted as saying.

At the zone, travelers can rent electric scooters and electric bicycles which can be returned anywhere on the island after use. EVPASS, a smart mobility company, will operate four trucks to pick up and charge used scooters. Through the mobility rental service, vouchers and coupons which travelers could use in the commercial area around the airport would be issued. EVPASS said it would develop tour courses for electric scooters and bicycles.
