SEOUL --  KT, a top telecom company in South Korea, will create a digital twin platform that enables various simulation tests such as flood predictions through collaboration with EGIS, a domestic company with three-dimensional spatial information processing technology.
A digital twin is a virtual clone of an object or an infrastructure. Digital twins are frequently used as testing grounds for new technologies or other elements to find out the results of real-life situations. Business operators can test their products under various conditions without causing an irreversible effect in real life.
The partnership between KT and EGIS will focus on creating digital twin platform services based on 3D maps and spatial information. Unexpected weather conditions can be predicted such as floods during a rainy season.
Using 3D spatial information technology, EGIS will establish safety systems in case of disasters, build integrated control and facility management systems, and help to process 3D spatial information.
"KT has the ability to analyze and utilize various big data drawn through digital twin simulation. We hope to create synergy with EGIS in smart building and smart city businesses," KT official Park Jung-ho said in a statement on July 26.
