SEOUL -- In an effort to efficiently handle unexpected threats caused by drones, South Korea's central city of Daejeon will build an anti-drone system for state-run agencies. After the establishment of the prevention system, the city will demonstrate its aerial surveillance functions.
Anti-drone systems are mostly used to detect drones and neutralize them before aerial vehicles reach the country's key facilities. According to South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS), five North Korean drones were flying in South's airspace in December 2022. Although one of them entered the capital city, the South Korean military failed to identify the incursion, allowing it to safely return to the North.
Daejeon said in a statement that the city has started to work with Government Buildings Management Office, an agency under South Korea's safety ministry, to build the anti-drone system. It will be established for government buildings used by national agencies including a military organization.
"We will do our best to protect people's lives and safety from the growing threat of drone terrorism through the establishment of a preemptive drone defense system," Daejeon's strategic business promotion bureau head Han Sun-hee said in a statement on February 27. Han hopes Daejeon will later become the city that leads the drone industry in South Korea.
The country's terrorism countermeasures committee unveiled its scheme to establish safety management infrastructure for crucial national facilities on February 17. Prime Minister Han Duck-soo pointed out during the meeting that various types of terrorism such as drones and cyberterrorism are causing concerns more than ever, adding that many different forms of terrorist attacks are also feared in the United States and Europe due to racism and dissatisfaction with society.
