S. Korean web content industry secures $5.2 mln export deal in Europe

SEOUL -- At an event designed to promote South Korean web-based content such as digital comics and novels in Paris, domestic companies, secured an export deal worth about $5.2 million.
 
The Korea Creative Content Agency, a government body charged with governing cultural content, said in a statement that 15 domestic firms recorded export contracts of some $5,276,000 at the "2023 K-Story & Comics in Europe." More than 300 business counseling services were conducted by the South Korean side. South Korean entertainment company Sound Alliance will provide its web novel content to French web novel platform operator Neovel. Toyou's Dream, a Seoul-based web cartoon studio, partnered with Kotoon, a French comic book publisher.  
 
Web cartoons, also known as webtoons or webcomics, are digital comic books created to fit into web or mobile platforms. South Korea is the birthplace of webtoons. Popular webtoons are recreated into many different content including TV dramas and films such as Kingdom, a Netflix Original drama series that depicted a zombie-infested kingdom. According to market research firm Spherical Insights & Consulting, the global webtoon market is projected to reach $60.1 billion in 2030.
 
South Korean content developers are seeking to gain a competitive edge in the global market. Naver Webtoon, the web cartoon wing of Naver, provides various language services including English, Japanese, French, Spanish, and German. Naver Webtoon's headquarters was moved to Los Angeles in 2020 for globalization.
