HD Hyundai Electric joins offshore wind power project in southwestern coastal county

SEOUL -- HD Hyundai Electric, an electrical equipment manufacturer and energy solution provider, will take part in a project to establish offshore wind power infrastructure that can power some three million households in South Korea’s southwestern coastal county of Jindo. The energy solution developer will supply wind turbines and power equipment for offshore substations.
 
The project involves the South Korean office of Pacifico Energy, a United States-based renewable energy power plant developer, CS Wind, a South Korean wind tower maker, Daebul Shipbuilding, a domestic ship repair company, and Korea Ocean Engineering & Consultants Co. (KOCECO). A total of 19 trillion won ($14.4 billion) will be invested.
 
HD Hyundai Electric said in a statement on October 30 that the company will join the project to set up the 3.2 gigawatt-class offshore wind power infrastructure in Jindo. The company is in charge of manufacturing and providing wind turbines and equipment for offshore substations. An offshore substation houses electrical components for transforming power supplied by wind turbines for exporting to the onshore grid.
 
The infrastructure will consist of three complexes. While Pacifico Energy Korea will oversee equity investment, Daebul Shipbuilding is responsible for the maintenance and inspection of wind power generators. CS Wind will supply substructure materials for offshore wind turbines and KOCECO will install submarine cables. 
 
South Korea has unveiled an energy roadmap to achieve net-zero carbon dioxide emissions by 2050. In February 2022, HD Hyundai Electric partnered with GE Renewable Energy, a leading wind turbine supplier, to produce large offshore wind turbines optimized for South Korea's geographical characteristics. The South Korean company's technology will be combined with GE Renewable Energy's know-how in manufacturing offshore wind turbines with a capacity of 12 to 15 megawatts.
