SEOUL -- South Korea's major mobile carrier SK Telecom partnered with Australia's major medical device distributor ATX Medical Solutions, to supply "X Caliber," an artificial intelligence-based veterinary imaging assistant service to animal hospitals in Australia. The assistant service helps animal doctors read and diagnose images quickly.

X Caliber, commercialized in September 2022, detects abnormalities in dogs' musculoskeletal system, heart, and chest in about 30 seconds after X-ray photos are uploaded. Without installing separate servers, veterinarians can receive results anytime through linked mobile devices or PCs. As of November 2023, X Caliber was used at some 450 South Korean veterinary hospitals.

According to data cited by South Korea's state-run trade promotion agency KOTRA, Australia had a pet adoption household rate of 69 percent in 2022, higher than the United States at 57 percent and Britain at 40 percent. In 2022, there were around 5.5 million dogs and 4 million cats living with humans in Australia with a population of some 26 million.

SKT said in a statement on February 13 that the company will work with ATX Medical Solutions to provide X Caliber to Australian animal hospitals. X Caliber will be incorporated into ITX PACS, a cloud-based software tailored for accessing, storing, managing, and exchanging X-ray data across networked computers. SKT expects its AI solution will be used in around 300 animal hospitals in Australia by the first half of 2024.

In October 2023, the South Korean mobile carrier also partnered with Japanese electronic medical record solution provider Anicom Pafe, to supply X Caliber to Japan's pet medical facilities. SKT is also working with Vetology Innovations, a California-based animal healthcare solution provider, to make a foray into the U.S. market.
