Wang, who is also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, emphasized the importance of the meeting given the current global climate of instability and transformation, characterized by complex and intertwined security challenges. He expressed his welcome to the new BRICS members and highlighted the significance of collective efforts to discuss cooperation and peaceful solutions.
Wang put forward four initiatives for BRICS nations to collaboratively confront security threats. He called on BRICS countries to champion peaceful coexistence, maintain independence and autonomy, and be guided by genuine multilateralism while rejecting double standards and exceptionalism.
He stressed the importance of politically resolving regional conflicts and respecting the legitimate concerns of all members. Wang also urged BRICS nations to advocate for justice on the international stage, promote an equal, multipolar world order, and support inclusive economic globalization that benefits all.
According to analysts, BRICS, as a vital platform for developing nations, is expanding its role in promoting cooperation among the Global South and contributing to global stability. Cui Heng, a research fellow at the Center for Russian Studies of East China Normal University, noted that the St. Petersburg meeting shows that BRICS is extending its focus beyond economic matters to address shared security concerns. He also pointed out that as the Global South becomes increasingly influential in global affairs, China, Russia, and other BRICS members aim to strengthen ties with these countries to boost international influence and address challenges posed by Western nations.
Stanislav Byshok, an expert from Moscow State University's Faculty of Political Science, added that a key focus of the meeting is how BRICS countries can support one another despite existing challenges. He also suggested that peace initiatives related to the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict were expected to be discussed.
