South Korea's army has received the first batch of four AH-64E Apache Guardians for deployment at front-line army units to enhance deterrence capabilities against North Korean tanks and artillery, a state agency said Thursday.

South Korea has signed a $1.6 billion contract to buy 36 AH-64Es, an upgraded model of the AH-64D Longbow, by early 2017.

South Korea has upgraded a fleet of attack helicopters to neutralize North Korean tanks, multiple rocket launchers, and hovercraft as more than half of its MD 500 helicopters exceeded their maximum life cycle of 30 years.

The Guardian features improved digital connectivity, more powerful engines, its capability to control unmanned aerial vehicle and improved landing gear.
