SEOUL --SK E&C, a builder affiliated with South Korea's third-largest conglomerate, SK Group, will develop a competitive solar energy platform in cooperation with a domestic energy IT company that provides solar power solutions.

SK E&C said it signed a memorandum of understanding with Solar Connect on April 1 for cooperation in renewable energy and RE100, a global initiative that brings together the world's most influential enterprises committed to using 100 percent renewable energy by 2050. SK Group joined RE100 in December 2020.

SK E&C said it would combine its business development experiences and management capabilities with Solar Connect's expertise and IT technology and support renewable energy use for companies that joined RE100. "With this agreement, we will work closely with Solar Connect to develop various business models and continue to find business opportunities," said SK E&C's eco-energy division head Lee Hyeong-won.

In 2020, SK E&C developed a window-type solar power generation system, using film-type solar panels that are up to 40 percent transparent. It comes with an electricity distribution system that can send stored electricity back into homes and offices. Conventional solar power systems are installed on roofs or walls. However, such systems require a lot of space to maximize generating efficiency.

SK E&C has been involved in wind farm projects. In November 2020, the builder joined an all-star business team involving domestic and foreign companies that would secure core technologies and develop a competitive model for floating offshore wind farm projects at home and abroad.
