SEOUL -- South Korea's Hyundai Motor tied up with Hyundai Electric & Energy Systems, a domestic electrical equipment manufacturer and energy solution provider, to develop a hydrogen fuel cell package for mobile power generation that would be used at industrial fields such as construction sites and port facilities.

The auto group said that its fuel cell experience would be combined with Hyundai Electric's power equipment expertise to develop a hydrogen fuel cell package dedicated for mobile power generators and alternative maritime power (AMP) supply solutions. AMP is an alternative power source for oceangoing vessels to reduce emissions.

The new fuel cell-based package is expected to be a game-changer in the mobile generator market dominated by diesel generators, Hyundai Motor said, adding eco-friendly, distributed power solutions can address carbon-neutral electric needs in a variety of industrial sectors such as port facilities, construction sites and industrial complexes.

The auto group will supply its polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) system used in fuel cell vehicles and provide technical support while Hyundai Electric will develop and commercialize a fuel cell-based power generation package that includes mobile generators and AMP supply systems.

"This MOU underlines the importance of providing carbon-neutral solutions in power generation applications in order to accelerate the establishment of a sustainable hydrogen society," Hyundai's fuel cell center head Kim Sae-hoon said in a statement on Jully 29.

Hyundai Electric would develop business models as it believes that fuel cell development will be the core of the microgrid business. "Based on accumulated technology and know-how, we will develop various new business models and use them as an axis of ESG management," said Hyundai Electric CEO Cho Seok.
