The K9 is one of the most popular self-propelled howitzers in the world. Egypt is the eighth foreign country to adopt the K9 artillery system after Türkiye, India, Poland, Norway, Finland, Estonia, and Australia. Egypt agreed to import a package of hundreds of K9A1, the upgraded version of the K9 artillery system, and support vehicles in a two trillion won ($1.5 billion) deal in February 2022.
Hanwha Aerospace said in a statement that the company will present a package of its self-propelled guns including the K9, at EDEX 2023, starting December 4. The South Korean company aims to target the Middle Eastern and African markets at the event, set to be visited by some 35,000 visitors.
Hanwha Aerospace will also showcase other weapons such as a Redback infantry fighting vehicle, Cheongeom, an air-to-ground guided missile system for armed helicopters, and Chunmoo, a multiple rocket launcher. Throughout the exhibition, the company plans to highlight its commitment to providing localized products tailored to the regional features of each client.
The first batch of K9A1 is scheduled to be delivered to Egypt before 2025, and the remainder would be produced at a state-run military plant in Egypt. In December 2023, the defense company also signed a deal worth 3.4 trillion won with Poland's armed forces agency, which includes supplying 152 K-9 self-propelled howitzers by 2027.
