The South Korean pavilion at the 2010 World Expo in Shanghai has greeted its one-millionth visitor about a month after the opening of the global showcase event, officials in Seoul said Thursday.

The expo opened on May 1 for a six-month run under the theme of "Better City, Better Life," with South Korea among some 190 countries and 50 international organizations participating.

The Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency (KOTRA) said in a release that the landmark visitor was Huang Xiaomei, an 18-year-old Chinese worker who arrived at 4:40 p.m. on Wednesday with her older sister in tow.

Huang, who hails from the eastern province of Anhui and works in Shanghai, received a round-trip air ticket to Seoul from Shanghai, KOTRA said, adding she is a fan of South Korean pop singers.

The number of visitors to the expo reached 9.07 million as of noon on Thursday, the official Web site showed. More than 11 percent of the expo's total visitors have been to the South Korean pavilion.

"An average of 30,000 people per day visited the South Korean pavilion," said Park Eun-woo, director general for the pavilion, in a statement. "We believe that we will be able to attract 6 million visitors during the six months of the event."

South Korea is aiming to attract 6 million visitors to its three-story national pavilion built at a cost of about US$24 million. The 7,680-square-meter space is equipped with various facilities to host cultural events and sideshows in the coming months.//Yonhap
