Marc Grossman left yesterday on a tour that will also include India, China and Central Asia in preparation for a conference on Afghanistan in Turkey in November, the State Department said in Washington, without providing a detailed itinerary.
“Job one between the US and Pakistan on the counterterrorism front is to tackle the Haqqani network,” State Department representative Victoria Nuland said earlier yesterday at a briefing in Washington. “We’ve got to find a way to work on this together.”
The visit by the envoy comes after officials in Pakistan came together in a united front to condemn comments by Admiral Mullen, and have told reporters unequivocally that the US would have more to lose that Pakistan.
Despite the harsh comments from Pakistan though, US officials remain adamant that officials from both Pakistan‘s military and internal security groups need to deal with internal threats before throwing criticisms at the US.
