The boat has been trapped in Antarctica for more than a week. The Araron arrived at 5 p.m. local time, near the Sparta and dispatched Korean sailors on a rubber raft to assess the damage to the 500-ton Russian fishing boat.
“If the boat has a hole, we should send another boat to do welding repairs, but if not, we can fix the damage by pouring cement,” said the ship‘s South Korean captain Kim Hyeon-yool.
The Russian boat had a rip measuring about 150 centimeters.It floated 60 kilometers west of the collision due to currents.
According to the captain, the Araon plans to assist with repairs to the Russian boat until Monday and guide the damaged ship to an ice-free zone on Tuesday.
