Libya‘s Foreign Minister, Ashour Bin Khayal, arrived in Seoul on Sunday for a four-day visit. The Libyan minister served as the country’s first ambassador to South Korea from 1981 to 1984, according to the ministry.

South Korean Foreign Minister, Kim Sung-hwan and Libyan Foreign Minister, Ashour Bin Khayal, discussed enhancing bilateral relations on Tuesday since Libya emerged from a year of civil war and as Seoul seeks to increase its post-war reconstruction role in the North African country, a Seoul official announced.

According to the foreign ministry officials, the ministers discussed ways to enhance bilateral relations and issues of mutual concern, including Korea‘s efforts to support Libya’s reconstruction, and Libya‘s support of the Korean companies operating in the country.

In Seoul, Khayal also had a meeting with Prime Minister Kim Hwang-sik, senior officials at the Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs as well as business executives of the International Contractors Association of Korea.

Libya’s nine-month civil war ended last October with the capture and killing of its former ruler, Moammar Gadhafi, who had ruled there for more than four decades.

Since Gadhafi has gone, foreign companies, including South Korean builders and trading firms, are competing to help further develop the oil-rich nation.
