At least eight people died in a heavy snow blizzard which hit eastern Hokkaido on March 2. The wind speed was 109km per hour and temperatures dropped to minus 6 degree Celsius.

According to Kyodo News, a car buried in snow was found with the bodies of a woman and her three children. Another car was stuck in the snow and couldn’t move. People trapped in this car were taken to a nearby hospital and confirmed dead. Doctors said that they died of carbon monoxide poisoning. The engine of the car was on because the exhaust pipe got stuck in the snow. They couldn’t stop the car and eventually, exhaust gases filled the car which caused their death.

Many cars and trucks got stuck on the road due to the thick layer of snow covering the roads, Kyodo said. The transportation came to a standstill due to the heavy snow.

In other instance, one nine-year-old girl was found weeping in the arms of his father who was later confirmed dead by a doctor at a hospital, Kyodo said. He died while saving his daughter from the blizzard. The daughter is in hospital now and in better condition, doctors said.

The storm also caused derailing of a bullet train but no casualties were reported, Kyodo said.
